Osama bin Laden used to be the toast of the town in the news. But now he is “so last decade.” Predictably, perhaps, but it often takes a silver bullet to slay a vampire. He might still be in the news if not for that silver bullet.
Even zoomed in, it’s hard to discern interest. Most of these are not even about the Osama who hogged headlines in his heyday.
Al Qaeda does not get much attention. All of the phrases at least are about the Al Qaeda under the bed, not some other AQ. Again, this is zoomed in so we can see some of it.
ISIS, the Islamic State, is still in the news. This is zoomed out, and still doesn’t quite fit the window. Perhaps we will know ISIS is defeated when we hear about it as much as we currently hear about Osama.
There are plenty of badly behaved actors in that region. But it’s puzzling we hear less and less about Syria’s Bashar al-Assad these days. It’s clear from the next screenshot that Syria is not going quiet any time soon. This is zoomed out and barely fits.
I don’t know why Assad is mentioned little, while Syria is mentioned a lot but it is a curiosity.
