Because we can associate language with Left/Right bias, using phrases not just terms, we can also associate Left/Right bias with stories, outlets, topics, days, weeks … And authors, i.e., journalists. We can even do that for facebook posts, twitter feeds, press releases, a particular NY TIMES article, transcribed podcast or cspan show, or even your grandmother’s World War II memoirs (well, probably would take a lot of retraining to go back pre-2019). And we can do it fast. Maybe millions per day.
So it might be time to start putting numbers on journalists, which might put the idea in someone’s head to commercialize some of our data feed (api available!) in news triage, spin-finding, and generally, fake-news disinformation-fighting.
But let’s be careful. Some people use phrases on the left (even quoting long passages) to bait readers into looking at their right-wing positions. Some authors write differently for different outlets. Some simply use the language of sports, business, entertainment, or military hardware, which might have an association with one side or the other, broadly. The left-right-center ratings make most sense when looking at political writing. And some authors change their writing. Consider David Brooks and George Will as examples of people who would have been considered on the right two decades ago, but now might be center and center-right. I noted recently here that Kari Paul’s move to GUARDIAN from MARKETWATCH released left-leaning language that was not present in her writing just weeks earlier.
So we’re rating language in found documents attributed to an author. We’re not rating authors; just rating language they appear to use. And we’re restricting ourselves to recent articles.
Just a sample for now, and we can keep this up as long as there is interest.

We of course recognize that this attention is helpful for journalists establishing a reputation, solidifying a reputation, or correcting a reputation. Contact us if there are any issues or corrections, or if you’d like to see ratings on particular authors.
Here are about 80 recently rated authors with the above shown in context. Theresa Braine for example is about as center as one can be, though we have attached “very slightly center-right” to her name. Note that many of these ratings are subject to small sample effects as shown here and above. We could of course apply a sample minimum, though that would oppose the recency restriction (take that issue up with a reference-class-aware statistician).
