Mentions in media are important. As people source their news from nontraditional places, coverage is important. Even more than comprehensiveness. But weighting and filtering may be even more important. At #CivicFeed, restriction to geographical locale is a simple menu selection.
Here, we’re comparing media mentions in March 2019 among several Democratic Party (and other) hopefuls. This does not support some of the usual inferences, as for example, March was when Beto O’Rourke made a big splash. And Biden is in the middle of a news-dominating story. Still, if you like Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, or Bernie Sanders, this chart is a good picture. For Schultz, Booker, and Holder, this is not such a good picture.
Mentions are best interpreted in terms of cycles and trends. And it’s still very early. So the absolute numbers here are just a first stepping stone toward real assessment and feedback, which will be important for the next few months for fledgling campaigns. #CivicFeed can help with the next steps.
