Pete Buttigieg’s rise in media attention has indeed been remarkable. He’s caught Kamala Harris in total stories, which is no easy thing to do since Kamala Harris is the leading female attention-getter in many respects (sharing top honors for female Dem2020 candidates with Elizabeth Warren now and then).
But there is literally a hole in the Buttigieg coverage, and it’s in an important place: Toledo, OH to Pittsburgh, PA:
Ms. Harris, on the right, also shows more reach into Minnesota, importantly. And down to Missouri, for what it’s worth. Also deep into Texas and Florida. Basically Mayor Pete does well with the Indiana-contiguous counter-Appalachian diagonal. It’s certainly important to do well in the heartland, but this is not exactly blanket coverage in the Upper Midwest.
Harris also has a small hole in the Ohio Valley, and this could simply be due to lack of excitement or general lack of coverage. Even CivicFeed’s own sampling artifacts. Still, there is a glaring regional restriction to the Buttigieg campaign appeal, even if his national numbers look very good.
